By now you must have seen the ubiquitous ads advising you to sneeze into your sleeve, not into your hand. They’re everywhere: on the subway, rubbish bins, bus shelters, clinics and more. They’re a Toronto phenomenon initiated this year by Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Director of Communicable Disease Control at Toronto Public Health.

Well, as if posters weren’t enough, this great video made by a group of US doctors tells you the proper etiquette when Doing It In Your Sleeve.

Finally, a few more bacteria facts with photos that should scare you straight, if none of the above things did.

I’d just like to point out that I’ve been coughing into my sleeve for years.

I think it’s classy. Not that I have any class.

I’ve been telling people this for years – at the very least coughing into the BACK of your hand!

  3. Brad Says:

I personally prefer to cough directly onto my shoulder – it’s even less likely to come into contact with other things.
