The Lives of Others

So many films this week! You’re on your own for finding out what the films are about. I’ll just tell you when and where they are.

Film Finds this week:
“The Lives of Others” (free), “Faust” (free) by CINSSU.
“Lucky Number Slevin” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” (free with free snacks) by Vic Film Society.
“The Shutka Book of Records” (free) by Doc Soup.
“Half Nelson” ($6) at Bloor Cinema.
“Tokyo Story” ($8) at Cinematheque.
Details after the jump.

Mongrel Media and CINSSU present a free advance screening of the award-winning German film The Lives of Others: a film focusing on the horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny system of observation in the former East Germany. It has a score of 8.5 on IMDB. I think that’s a pretty good indication that it won’t disappoint. Free admission with a pass (you have to contact CINSSU for a pass). Wed. Feb 7, 7:00 pm at Innis Town Hall (2 Sussex Ave.)

CINSSU is also doing their usual Free Friday Film. This week’s film is Faust, also at Innis Town Hall, on Friday Feb. 9, at 7:00 pm.

It’s worth noting that CINSSU also has films on tuesdays as part of WTF?! Films. As the name suggests, theses films are a little out there. On this week: Pi and Tetsuo. But be warned: “If human mutilation and self violence of a kind makes you squirm, it’s not your week to join us.” The films are on Tuesday Feb. 6, at 7:00 pm in room 222 of Innis College (2 Sussex Ave.)

“Lucky Number Slevin” and “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” are being shown by the Victoria College Film Friday on Monday Feb 5, starting at 7:00 pm at the Cat’s Eye. Again, the Cat’s Eye is in the basement of the Wymilwood building (here’s a map).

Hoc Docs Doc Soup presents “The Shutka Book of Records”. It sounds like an interesting film. Check their site for details. Happens Wed. Feb 7, at the Bloor Cinema, 6:30 pm and 9:15 pm. A limited number of free tickets to the 9:15 pm screening are available at the box office for students with vaild ID, courtesty of the Toronto Star. If you’re a grad student, you can apparently pick up free tickets from the GSU. Details here.

Also at the Bloor Cinema, the movie Half Nelson is showing. I’ve been meaning to check this movie out. I’ve heard great things about it. It plays on Wed. Feb 7th at 4:15 pm and Thurs. Feb 8th at 7:00 pm.

Finally, Cinematheque is showing a cinematic classic Tokyo Story by Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu. “One of the manifest miracles of the cinema” (The New Yorker), this film is showing on Monday Feb. 5 at 6:30 pm.
