Hot Yams, Batman!
February 13th, 2007 by AmyIf you’ve been at U of T for at least a year, you may remember Radical Roots, the vegan organic cafe that served healthy lunches at the International Student Centre (ISC), across from the Koffler Centre. Well, Radical Roots is no more – due, I’m guessing, to the fact that their food was a little overpriced, servings were tiny, and worst of all, it sometimes took close to an hour to get your food.
You gotta hand it to those veggies though, because Hot Yam! (U of T’s new vegan food collective) has sprung up to fill the vacancy. It’s in the same spot – 33 St. George Street, in the ISC building (the big yellow house in its own pretty garden). And this Wednesday Hot Yam! is creating and serving a Valentine’s themed lunch. “It will be a celebration of vegan, local, organic, accessible, healthy and heart-y food”. Lunch will be an affordable $4 (for 3 courses), and if you want to eat and run, bring your own tupperware.
Also featured at the lunch will be some home-made crafts and baked goods for sale by U of T’s very own eco-magazine, Green Perspective, so bring a few extra toonies and pick up some chili truffles and pornigami.

[...] At Blog UT (yes, even U of T has their own blog), fans of the much-missed Radical Roots restaurant will be happy to know that its replacement Hot Yam! (what a great name), is serving up yummy vegan grub. [...]

What are you talking about? Radical Roots was not overpriced! It was practically subsidized by the people working there. And there was a sliding scale to help keep it affordable. 5$ for a GIGANTIC meal (enough for two, usually) and everything was organic. And it really didn’t take that long. I would wait much longer in line at the Arbor Room back in the day.
I was really sad that it went under. But it’s great to here that something’s starting up again.
