Film Finds: 25/02/07

Oscar

So while everyone was busy watching the Oscars, know that yours truly was diligently putting together this film finds post. After reviewing the Oscar winner’s list, I realized the only one I’ve seen is “Little Miss Sunshine”. I definitely plan to see “Pan’s Labyrinth” and perhaps “An Incovenient Turth”. I’m kind of bummed I missed my chance to see “Das Leben der Anderen”, which was featured in a previous Find Finds post.

Maybe everyone was too busy watching the Oscars, or maybe it’s the end of the month, but some sites I check for films are out of date. This is what I have for this week’s Film Finds:
Wednesday
RAID (Free)
AN INCOVENIENT TRUTH ($6)
Thursday
U of T FILM FESTIVAL BEGINS ($8)
Friday
FULL METAL JACKET and EYES WIDE SHUT (Free)

RAID
The National Film Board of Canada, in partnership with the Finnish Consulate presents the Finnish film RAID as part of their “Nordic Nights” programme. IMDB seems to think highly of this film (see this page).

Raid is an enforcer for hire at the right price, returning to Finland after a two-year stint living in Russia. His ex-girlfriend appears to be a victim of arson involving neo-Nazis. As in all good crime stories, things are never quite what they seem, and the body count starts to climb, too. Raid’s old friend Inspector Jansson asks him to do some digging, not because of his people skills but connections to the local seedy element.

When: Wednesday, February 28, 7 PM
Where: NFB Cinema (150 John St.)
Cost: Free!

AN INCOVENIENT TRUTH
Well, it won an Oscar for the best documentary, so it’s probably worth a view. If you missed his talk at U of T, you might as well catch this movie. See IMDB page.
When: Wednesday, February 28, two showings: 4:30pm and 7:00pm
Where: Bloor Cinema
Cost: $6, from what I recall of Bloor Cinema

U of T FILM FESTIVAL
The U of T Film Festival starts on Thursday March 1st, and runs till Saturday March 3rd. We’ll have a separate post about this, but if you’re keen, check their website for the programme.
When: Thursday March 1 – Saturday March 3
Where: Hart House Theatre
Cost: $8 for student tickets

FULL METAL JACKET and EYES WIDE SHUT
This Friday, CINSSU brings you a Stanley Kubrick double bill. They’re screening Kubrick’s last two films, each focusing on one of the two most talked about and controversial social institutions in North American life: the battlefield and the bedroom.
When: Friday March 2, 7pm, per usual
Where: Innis College Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave.
Cost: Free, as usual.
