BBQ in the Snow – EWB Day

March 1st, 2007 by

University of Toronto EWB day

I was walking down King College Road today at around 2pm and noticed a BBQ grill set up outside, in the blizzard! Upon speaking to the fearless troopers manning the grill, I found out it was for EWB Day (Engineers Without Borders): a crazy day of public outreach with the goal of raising awareness about poverty. According to their facebook event page, they’re also have

A booth at Union Station handing out newspapers dated in 2025 where we have ended poverty and what were the steps since now that we took to get there.

Coffee Challenge at Union (Fair Trade vs. Non-Fair Trade coffee….this one is the new and freakin way improved Pepsi vs. Coke challenge)

Cheers to them for coming up with creative/crazy ways to raise awareness. If you’ve missed the events today, fear not, EWB has another event coming up tomorrow:

EWB Comedy Night
When: Friday, March 2, 2007, 6 – 9pm
Where: O’Gradys (Second Floor), 171 College Street
Details: For tickets, send a message to sarahbasma@gmail.com. You can also check their facebook event page.

    Hey!

EWB has another event happening on Monday for those interested. Everyone is welcome, not just engineers! This is a public event

Leading Lives Speaking Tour and Photo Exhibit – Tom Owen, Canadian Engineer
    Free!
    Monday, March 5, 2007, 7pm
    Debates Room
    Hart House, University of Toronto
    7 Hart House Circle

In the summer of 2006, Canadian Tom Owen travelled along the Niger River through Mali and Guinea to understand the lives and livelihoods of people living along “the pulse of West Africa”. An impassioned and dynamic speaker, Tom is currently touring across Canada sharing stories about his journey and the people he met through a travelling photo exhibit and speaking tour. This is an outstanding opportunity to learn about life in western Africa and the creativity, determination, and ingenuity of the people who call the river banks their home.
