It’s Story Time for Toronto!

Gather up kids, because it’s story time! Remember the days when you were tightly snuggled in bed and your parents told you bedtime stories? Yeah, neither do I. Regardless, I think there’s something very comfy and romantic about a night of story telling, don’t you think so?

The 29th Toronto Festival of Story Telling kicks off this Friday March 23, 2007 and runs till Sunday April 1. This is an annual festival organized by The Storyteller’s School of Toronto. This year’s theme: 007: Stories of Risk, Romance and Adventure. With stories every evening of the festival, you’re sure to find something that strikes your fancy, be it An Evening of Icelandic Saga: tales of of love, murder and revenge in Viking Iceland!, French Concert: An Evening of Stories from La Belle Province, or From the Edges of Asia: An Evening of Stories from Persia and Siberia.

Festival Highlights

Friday, March 23 – Festival Launch
Palmerston Library Theatre (560 Palmerston Ave), 7:30 – 9:30 pm, PWYC (Suggested $10)
If I Had Only Known: Stories of Immigration: Hear the true, personal or family stories of immigrants who dared to come! Adventures faced them in Canada that they couldn’t even imagine!

Tuesday March 27 – From the Edges of Asia: An Evening of Stories from Persia and Siberia
Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge St.), 7:30-9:30 pm, PWYC (suggested donation $10)
From the Shahnameh (an 11th century Persian epic) comes this tale of father and son and two star-crossed lovers who defy parental disapproval and a mighty army at the gates of Kabul. Ariel Balevi

From the centre of Siberia, a story of a girl born in a plant and transformed into human form by an old shaman woman. This girl was sent from heaven to share her wisdom and beauty with people. On the way to her wedding with the brave hunter, Harzhit Bergen, an evil spirit stole her face and took her place. Will the destined lovers be reunited? Kira Van Deusen

Friday, March 30 – 1001 Friday Nights of Storytelling
Walmer Road Baptist Church Sanctuary (188 Lowther Ave.), 7:30 – 9:30 pm, $5
Part of Toronto’s legendary, long-running adult storytelling series, this night will feature our guests from here and away. 1001 Friday Nights of Storytelling actually runs every week, and it usually takes place at Innis College. Find out more on their website.

Sunday, April 1 – Storm Fools’ Cabaret
Lula Lounge (1585 Dundas St. West), 8:00 – 10:00 pm, $10 student IN ADVANCE
Storm fools were traveling native storytellers, more often than not arriving in the middle of a storm! Stories to end the festival that are sure to excite! Adult content to be expected!
