Guide to Canadian Music Week ’08

canadian music week

This is late given Canadian Music Week really kicked off festivities on Wednesdays… but with the two biggest nights left over thought I would get a quick guide up for them… basically suggesting three of the many (many!) shows going on tonight and tomorrow. Definitely not quite the guide i posted last year… but hey, graduating and not having a thesis to procrastinate on changes plenty.

Friday/Tonight:

Drake Underground: Huckleberry Friends, Tropics, Laura Barrett, Slim Twig, Winter Gloves, Woodhand, Skratch Bastid.
Simply put this show is a chance to see a wealth of local talent. Plus its only $5 at the door making it one of the cheaper shows to catch.

Silver Dollar Room: Jenny Omnichord, Tokyo Sex Destruction, Ox, The Burning Hell, The United Steel Workers of Montreal, Proof of Ghosts.
I’m a big fan of United Steel Workers of Montreal + their fun bluegrass music… and i just had to listen to Tokyo Sex Destruction based on their name… and wasn’t let down… definitely worth a check out tonight ($10 at the door).

Tattoo Rock Parlour: Chad Hatcher, The Painted Birds, Summerside, Hey Ocean!, Dearly Beloved, Steve Hill.
The cover is apparently $0… and if you can get into tattoo for free tonight worth doing just to check the place out. Plus some of the bands sound pretty alright.

Saturday/Tommorrow

The Indies at Canadian Room in the Royal York: Spirits, Young Galaxy, The Cliks, Lowest of the Lo, The Besnard Lakes, Tokyo Police Club, New Pornographers.
It’s $35 at the door… but by far has the biggest indie names of the week with besnard lakes, tokyo police club and new pornographers on tap… and truthfully any chance to see tokyo police club live should be seriously considered… among the most energetic and fun acts you find out there.

Horseshoe: Maybe Smith, Said the Whale, The Ghost is Dancing, Tom Fun Orchestra, The Saint Alvia Cartel, White Cowbell Oklahoma, The Creepshow.
You get to see lots of bands!! The show starts at 830 with Maybe Smith and The Creepshow takes the stage at 1:20. Basically 5-6 of live music at arguably one of Toronto’s best Live venues. Plus there are some good up and coming bands here… for $12 you can’t go wrong.

Lee’s Palace: Sunriser, Rock Plaza Central, Yoav, The Pigeon Deterctives, My Shaky Jane.
I’m not going to lie… this recommendation is based solely on the fact Rock Plaza Central is one of my favorite local acts… Are We Not Steel Horses is an awesome album… and seeing last year at CWM was lots of fun… This show is $15 at the door… that’s getting up there for CWM… still worth it, but there are cheaper shows out there for sure.

So that’s it… my apologies on the fact this guide isn’t so comprehensive (i.e. it kind of sucks)… and that it wasn’t up a few days ago… but hopefully some of you all make it to some of these shows!
