June 10th, 2008 by Alex | Co-Editor
What: The Worldwide Short Film Festival
When: June 10th – 15th
Where: The Cumberland, The Varsity, The Bloor
Cost: $10/screening (several short films screen together, with each show being about 90 mins)
The Worldwide Short Film Festival kicked off this evening with a Gala screening of Award Winning Shorts from Around the World (which screens again on Sunday and should not be missed!) and will be going strong all week at The Cumberland, The Bloor, and The Varsity cinemas. Here’s a preview of what’s coming this week and what we recommend.
Thursday, June 12th
Celebrity Shorts - 7:30PM – Cumberland
The program includes a short starring Bill Murray and one directed by Kate Hudson.
Japanese Spotlight – 9:30PM – Varsity
As the name would suggest: a selection of shorts from Japan.
Friday, June 13th
Scene Not Herd: Music Videos – 7PM – Royal
This set includes music videos by some wonderful Canadian bands like The New Pornographers (“Challengers”), Arcade Fire (“Black Mirror”), and Emily Haines (“Our Hell”).
Then you can head on over to the afterparty from 9:00 PM to 1:00AM at the Gibson Showroom (1205 King Street West), featuring live performances by Cancel Winter, Super Fantastic Soundsystem, and Kids and Explosions (Academy Award®-nominated director Josh Raskin, I MET THE WALRUS)!
Saturday, June 14th
Oh! Canada: Canadian Comedy Shorts – 6:30PM – Cumberland
Canada had some great films (comedies included) screening at last year’s festival, and I expect this year’s to be just the same. This program includes a short film about Dave Foley.
Sunday, June 15th
Repeat Screening of “Award Winners From Around the World” – 9:30PM – Cumberland
This program is not to be missed. Last year’s Award Winners program showcased some of the best films at the festival, including the lovely Canadian NFB film “The Danish Poet”. The program includes “Peter and Ben” (which also screened at HotDocs), a short documentary that tells the story of a lonely man and his best friend, Ben, a sheep, in an unconventional style. An excellent, whimsical little doc.
