What’s On: First Week of Class

September 5th, 2008 by

Con Hall At NightWell, Frosh Week is unfortunately coming to a close, and classes are looming (sorry!). You are probably starting to feel the first-time-at-University jitters, and have no clue what is waiting for you on the other side of that ominous weekend. Thankfully, U of T has planned a whole lot of great events to get you settled in, and keep the Frosh week spirit going. And of course, blogUT is here to tell you all about it.

After the jump, read about some of the things that are going on around campus during the first week back at school. Of course, follow the links for more information.

First, the fun stuff. If you like cars or if building a race car from scratch (and then racing it!) sounds exciting to you, whether or not you are an engineer, attend the Formula SAE recruitment meeting on Tuesday, September 9th, at 6:15pm in the Mining Building, rm. 128.

Also, check out Wide Open House at Hart House on Wednesday, September 10th. Part orientation, part concert, this continues all day long and includes, among other things, tours of Hart House, a Club fair and many orientations, a free lunch, and a live DJ, and culminates in a concert in the quad with Apostle of Hustle and Broken Social Scene’s Andrew Whiteman. See their website for a detailed schedule.

Then, on Friday September 12th, The Cinema Studies Students Union will be showing another instalment of Free Friday Night Films (hint: they happen every Friday night) at the Innis Town Hall. They will be showing The Red Balloon at 7pm, followed by Flight of the Red Balloon at 7:35. Or, if storytelling is more your thing, then come out to 1001 Friday Nights of Story Telling (again, a regular Friday night occurrence), at the Innis College Cafe. Although there will be a host and some regular contributors, it is an open stage for anyone to share an oral story – no reading allowed. Doors open at around 7:30pm, and the event occurs at 8-10pm. There is a suggested donation of $5.

As for orientations, there are many to chose from. Welcome Week is one of biggest organized events on campus. Think of it like an alternate Frosh Week, brought to you by Student Life. Although it has already started, it continues until Friday September 12th. It offers many orientations covering almost every facet of life on campus, and also some fun events where you can get to know your fellow students. Please note that registration is required for all Welcome Week Events. Here are some of the things that are going on:

  • Monday, September 8th, 5:30-7:30pm – The Essential U of T. As the name suggests, this orientation is meant to introduce you to the key points about U of T, in terms of both academics and student life.
  • Monday, September 8th, 12:30-1:30pm – Connect With The Campus. This is a guided tour of Campus.
  • Tuesday, September 9th, 4-6pm – Learning to Lead: Finding ways to develop your leadership skills at U of T. This will show you how to look for and find leadership opportunities  and workshops on campus, and how to determine which one is right for you.
  • Wednesday, September 10th, 5-7pm – Maple Madness Mixer: A Social Mixer for International Students. Another orientation that teaches you how to get involved on campus, but tailored specifically for international students. And of course, you get to meet other students and student life staff, and even make an ice cream Sunday. Maple Syrup will be involved.
  • Thursday, September 11th, 12-1pm, tours 1-2pm – Sports at U of T. This is an information fair about sports on campus. Learn about sports opportunities and U of T’s great gyms. Then, take a tour of one of the sports facilities on campus. The tours leave from Hart House’s East Common Room at 1pm.

There are also some orientations hosted by other groups on campus. The Career Centre is hosting a Career Information Days Seminar from 10-11am on September 8-12 (the link above is for one of the days). This is a seminar that will teach you to get the most out of your Career Fair experience by learning how to interact with potential employers.  Or if you know that your dream job is in medicine, then attend the Applying to the Faculty of Medicine seminar from 2-4pm on September 11th. This will explain the application process and outline some of the requirements. Please note that you need to register for both of these events on the Career Centre website.

It is all too easy to get lost in everything that U of T has to offer. So whether you choose a concert, a party, or an orientation, remember that these events are a great way to meet other students, get to know your university, and make the campus feel a little bit smaller.
