American Election Extravaganzas: 3 Great Election Events
November 1st, 2008 by Nathaniel
So have you decided where you are going to be for the … eh… second most important election this year? The election I am referring to in that so blatantly stolen line from the zeitgeist and The Hour, is of course the American election. Whether or not we are willing to admit that the election on November 4th is the one most people have been looking forward to, it is generally agreed that this election is one of the most important in U.S. history. With Senator Obama being the first African American presidential candidate and America’s economy, not to mention world image, in collapse many people have their eye on the result of this election as a turning point which will determine the future direction of America.
After the jump, read about 3 great ways to watch the results as they come in, and mark this momentous occasion.
Several groups are planning events to celebrate this mementous occasion., including Spacing Magazine, Toronto’s award winning urban space magazine, who are hosting a loosely organized event (500+ confirmed people at time of writing) in the case of an Obama victory. The ”Welcome Back America” celebration will take place in Yonge Dundas Square in the event of an Obama victory.
If, on the other hand, you want to be present for all the televised sniping, gaffes, and over blown sensationalism in a crowd of fellow interested, The Bloor Cinema along with Now Weekly are presenting “America Votes” at Bloor Cinema , where they will be showing CNN, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert live on a large theater screen. The event at the Bloor will be hosted by Brian Smith (of youandmedia.com, former Second City Alumni) with commentary by Alice Klein and Susan G. Cole of Now Magazine.
The final offering on election night is a little closer to home. Hart House will be hosting “Election Night Extravaganza” with a big screen TV, political commentary by U of T’s own Professors Ryan Hurl and Arnd Jurgensen, and, of course the requisite food, trivia, and door prizes.
