First Year Experience: Week 1
September 10th, 2009 by Felix ArifinI like it.
The three words that pretty much sum up my feelings today, being an undergrad student here at U of T.
As with any brand-new student, there’ll always be that time of transition and change. Nothing can change that – it’s a part of life. However, I have to say that it’s not as scary as I thought.
Then again, I’m taking the Music program. Which everybody dislikes. For some odd reason.
Wait, wait, wait, don’t click the Back button – I know that reading a rant about an undergrad at Music might seem extremely boring, but please hear me out.
Let me introduce myself first – I’m Felix Arifin. 17 years old, Indonesian/Chinese, moved to Canada when I was 9. I’m currently taking the Bachelor of Music program, and hopefully will get to the Composition program in second year.
I’m blogging here at blogUT because those higher in command (the people organizing this stuff) wanted to try something new for a change – a weekly blog called First Year Experience. They chose me because of my handsomeness and my suave demeanour.
…
I’m kidding – they chose me because I’m probably the only undergrad in their list.
Wow, talk about digressing from topic.
Basically this blog will be about my week-to-week experience here at the University of Toronto. I’ll chronicle my life as it goes, discussing about the different goings-on at my programs, talk about things that made me think in a different way, and tell stories about my day. It really depends – this is my blog after all. Muahahahahhahha.
So, about today.
I have to admit I have it easier than most. The most classes I have in a day is two classes, I managed to be opted out of a class because I already knew the material, and I enjoy what I do. It doesn’t mean I can get to relax, however. Now that I have more free time, I’ll have to set higher standards for my studies, projects, tests, and I’ll have to put up with more yelling from my mother telling me to get off my computer.
Classes were great though – my first lecture ever wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. The professor kept the class interesting by talking about the sly references to many obscene things John Lennon put in his music. There were many facepalms and gross-outs in this class.
After that I had Geology class.
To be honest with you I have no idea, nor would I ever care much about Geology. It’s not my thing – I love rock and roll, not rocks. Strange thing that happened today though was that our professor didn’t show up. So I just left after 20 minutes of waiting.
Like I said, I don’t have a hectic schedule, but it is still a schedule filled with high standards and interesting subjects. I really don’t mind though – as I’ve said in the beginning of this blog:
I like it.

I’m glad you like it. I have all 3 sciences and math so they’re all big lectures and you go in and out without really conversing with anyone.

hahaha…Great first post, Felix! I really enjoyed it. And you’re right, we obviously did chose you because of your striking good looks and suave demeanour. How could we have passed off the chance?! =P
Glad you’re liking it here at U of T! Looking forward to reading more!

Hey! How dare you say that. I’m an undergrad that somehow was good enough to be welcomed to blogUT too. >.>
Really? People dislike the Music program? I haven’t heard of that yet, although I guess that might be because I haven’t talked to many, many people yet. I don’t see why anyone could dislike anything related to Music, but anyways, I’d love to keep reading your blogs.
It’d be interesting to see how another first-year student is handling things around UT.

[ That first part there, by the way, is a joke. o.O I only realized that I needed an extra emoticon there to convey that, but forgot to put it in. Oops. ^^" ]

Pretty good, though there’s nothing much about the life on campus~
Same as Caroline, I’d like to see how things are going on~
Looking forward to your next blog.
