Urban Voice Oscillator

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

There is one particular installation at Nuit Blanche I encourage everyone to check out. This piece of art, created by Mahan Javadi and Bruno Billio, is called “Urban Voice Oscillator” and plays with concepts of light and sound. Green industrial laser, string and interactive computer programming and electronics are combined to create an interactive piece like no other. “Participants can have the energy and excitement of their voices animated and enlarged visually to an urban scale in a mesmerizing laser display,” explain the artists.

This is how the “Urban Voice Oscillator” works: “It will be activated through vocal interaction via a microphone that will manipulate and oscillate a vertical mohair string illuminated using the green laser. The resulting oscillation of the string will cause pulsation of the laser beam. The participant becomes the performer as a result of the personal voice becoming public through the large scale visual display.” More than I description of how it works, I believe you should experience it by yourself!

Mahan Javadi is an intrepid U of T student, who is involved in a variety of art and music projects. Early in the year, he was part of Come Up To My Room (5th Annual Alternative Design Event) at Gladstone Hotel. Additionally, he just got back from New York City, where he and Bruno participated in the Under the Bridge Festival, DUMBO Arts Center. These are just a few examples of  how a young artist takes every opportunity he sees and exploits it to its maximum. He certainly knows how to set the bar high.

The Go Abroad Fair

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Instead of traveling the world through your screen, you might as well pack a few belongings and experience it first hand. You might have a million of excuses holding you back, but why not put them aside and start a new chapter in your life? The Go Abroad Fair offers a series of events– including seminars, speakers, and discussion panels– that will make even easier for you to step out of your comfort zone and explore new countries, cities, and cultures. I personally spent my summer in New York city working at a publishing house called Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The best part of my experience, apart from being in such an overwhelming city as NY, was the opportunity to learn more about an industry that I had a serious interest in. Now I’m in my forth year I feel more confident about what I want to do after graduation, and I can count on a working and life experience like no other.

At the fair learn about a wide variety of study, travel, volunteer, internship and work abroad opportunities.

Where: Exhibition Place, Queen Elizabeth Exhibit Hall, 180 Princes’ Blvd, Toronto
When: Saturday, September 20, 2008: 12pm – 6pm / Sunday, September 21, 2008: 11am – 5pm

U of T and the Community!

Monday, September 8th, 2008

On Saturday, September 27th, the Centre for Community Partnerships will be organizing oUTreach. This is a day of community service to help connect students, staff, and faculty to the greater community. What originally started as a small group of U of T students determined to bring National Ghandi Day of Service to Canada, is now an annual event that spans across U of T’s three campuses and involves over 1000 participants. This year, a large variety of activities have been arranged with oUTreach community partners in the GTA, including tree-planting and environmental cleanups for a local watershed, nail painting for a women’s shelter, organizing a sports clinic at a local community centre, or updating the layout of an agency’s website. There is something of interest for everyone and plenty of opportunities where participants can utilize their skills and knowledge. Participants can use oUTreach as an opportunity to expose themselves to different social issues, meet other like-minded individuals, strengthen their social networks, or to simply have fun. Though it may only be for a day, indulge your civic-minded self and involve yourself in the community.
