Guide to Canadian Music Week ’08

canadian music week

This is late given Canadian Music Week really kicked off festivities on Wednesdays… but with the two biggest nights left over thought I would get a quick guide up for them… basically suggesting three of the many (many!) shows going on tonight and tomorrow. Definitely not quite the guide i posted last year… but hey, graduating and not having a thesis to procrastinate on changes plenty.

Delicious Cheap Eats: Rice Bar

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Rice BarA personal favorite of mine… and great place for cheap eats is Rice Bar.

For $10 or less you can get a huge helping of rice (jasmine, basmati, infused… or noodles) with veg, meat (chicken, beef, shrimp or tofu) and your choice between a variety of savoury sauces (such the excellent cocunut curry or black olive + vanilla options). You can never go wrong with such an order, its delicious, cheap and might just lead to leftovers.

In addition to their typical rice fare they make some pretty standout salads and appetizers (such as the delicious korean pizza), plus there’s always some specials and tasty deserts on the menu.

Finally… it’s not quite as cheap as lunch/dinner fare… but still a deal, Rice Bar also happens to make a stupendous brunch. They make some stellar eggs + hollandaise + toppings dishes, and an amazing (and likely not so healthy) dish called world toast… persian sweet bread topped with chocolate and a pomegranate maple syrup (mmmmm!).

As a bonus, you don’t need to feel so bad eating their food… all veg and rice is organic… all meat and eggs, free range.

Check out their menus (DinnerBrunch), and head down to kensington to get yourself some mighty tasty cheap eats.

Record Shops #2: She Said Boom!

SSB

So I wrote a review of Rotate This awhile back with the intention of writing many more over subsequent weeks… but then thesis and term projects got in the way and it never happened. Over the next few days (before i move to vancouver) i’m going to resume said reviews and, maybe post a few of my favorite other things about this great city.

First though… the review of She Said Boom!

Wednesday = Music day

Monday, March 26th, 2007

Somehow the above expression holds (very) true this week, apparently the local music gods have conspired in our favour. With enough super shows to fill the non-opposable digits on one hand, complaints certainly can’t be made. (more…)

Pitter Patter

Thursday, March 8th, 2007

Pitter PatterIt’s a great weekend to be a music fan in Toronto. To add to Canadian Music Week, the Zoobombs, David Myles, and Sarah Jerrom, the Inaugral Pitter Patter Music Festival is happening. It might not feature the big names that Canadian Music Week does… but it has some fantastic local talent on display… admittedly this might be a little late going up as the first four shows happened last night, but there is plenty of goodness in store.

ohbijou
Canadian Music Week is coming next week/weekend, March 7th to 10th to be specific. This week is always full of great shows… I’ve picked out a few that caught my eye for a variety of reasons. Hopefully this post can convince you to get out there and check out some great local (and not so local) talent.

One cent for Toronto

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

David Miller is asking for 1 cent of the GST to go to cities… you can find (much) more info on blogTO (from whom I’m poaching this story). If you agree you can sign a petition.

It’s an interesting issue to say the least. We already know many government services are underfunded, but it’s also true that cities need money to grow well. What’s your opinion on the matter?
