Pedaling Towards Sustainability – Benefit Concert Tonight!

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

droppedimage_4.jpg

We here at BlogUT are dependable admirers of cycling. Not only is it an enjoyable way to get exercise while traveling across the city, but it’s also a real step towards reducing our environmental footprints (and hey, it’s just plain sexy).

Stationary exercise bikes have always seemed agonizing to us (or at least for this BlogUTer), only because there is such a huge amount of wasted energy (you know, the bike doesn’t move).

Welobike, a Toronto organization, is remedying this issue with the introduction of their energy-harvesting bike. The prototype is a basic home exercise bike rigged up to a generator (made from a car alternator). The bike has the potential of generating 50 W of electricity per hour from pedaling and stores the clean green energy into an array of car batteries. TheĀ $1000 prototype was designed by Jerid LeClair of NBSInnovativeSolutions.com, but will cost much less once the bikes actually start being sold.

At their benefit concert tonight at the Annex Wreckroom, Welobike hopes to raise enough money to purchase these bikes to donate to The Gateway Homeless Shelter, who they are partnering up with for the event. The bikes will serve to light up some of their rooms on a continuous basis.

The concert will be hosted by local emcee Ill Seer, and will feature various genres of music, including folk-rock singer Julia Churchill, indie sensation Elephant and soulful hiphop by The Runaway.

Volunteers are still needed for tonight. For more information, contact info@welobike.com.

When: Tonight, 8 p.m.
Where: Annex Wreckroom
Details: $10 if you contact info@welobike.com in advance or $15 at the door. Check out their Facebook event page for more information.

Time to (re)Visit the ROM

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

michael_lee_chin_crystal_1.jpg

Even though $20 to see a soul-sucking, decrepit mummy is cheap in my eyes, it does tend to add up with all the other expenses in our lives (ie. tuition).

That’s why it’s great to see that the ROM has temporarily cut their prices:

Batty for the Bat Cave? Crazy for all things Medieval? From September 4 to October 5, 2007 the ROM is offering $5 off admission for all visitors. This is the best time to see your favourites at a specially reduced rate, as we prepare the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal galleries for A Season of Canada and new permanent galleries. Also included with your admission during this time period is a $5 off coupon for your next visit, valid from October 6, 2007 to March 7, 2008.

Keep in mind that the ROM is also FREE for the last hour and a half of every day. That may be just enough time to get your mummy-fix.

When: September 4 to October 5, 2007
Where: North-West corner of Bloor and Avenue
Details: $12 for students OR FREE (during the last hour and a half of the day)

mysterious-letter.jpg

Remember last month when we told you about the Dear Universe project?

Well, last Thursday in the JCR (Junior Common Room) at University College, I happened upon on the envelope pictured above. I asked around, but no one would claim ownership of the mysterious letter.

BlogUT has the exclusive inside story of what EXACTLY was inside the envelope after the break!
