blogUT and My City Lives bring you the Food Trucks!

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

As part of an ongoing video series, we here at blogUT partnered up with My City Lives to show you all the hot spots on the U of T campus. This month we bring you…(drum roll please)…the infamous St. George food trucks! Why? Because you know what? Restaurants are overrated. The trucks on St. George will change the way you eat…not necessarily for the better, but for cheap! And if you haven’t tried it yet, we promise you…you will soon!

My City Lives is an online platform that gives us the chance to capture and share our daily experiences around the city on video. Presented on an interactive map, these web stories show exactly where each video was filmed so you can learn more about the city based on the stories and experiences of your fellow citizens. Technological Wonders or Blunders?

Friday, October 1st, 2010

In an age where technology is all around us, it’s only natural for us to adapt to our environment. But what happens when you become so immersed in these technological advancements that you miss out on certain things? Think about it.

Smartphones today come equipped with apps like BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), Ping! and Kik. You know, instant messaging on the go. Although it’s amazing to see how far technology has come since the development of the cell phone, I feel as though this might have taken us a step back in terms of social interaction. Now I know this is a cause for debate, but let me make myself clear. It’s a good thing that we have cell phones with this type of app. It gives us the ability to contact people within seconds and to receive a response from them quicker than you can say “I know, right?!”.

On the other hand, how many times have you been SO immersed in your SMS conversation that you missed things that were going on around you? We’ve all seen people in the city with their heads down and their eyes glued to their cell phone. This is where I’ve got to say that we’ve taken a step back.

We’re taking a step back in actually interacting with people face-to-face (FaceTime and Skype do not count!). I think that if we all just left our phones in our pockets, purses or even in our hands (without looking down at them), we can finally take in the beauty of face-to-face interaction with both people and our beautiful city. I’ve actually tried to make it a habit now to stop looking at my phone while walking, so that I can take in how pretty it’s getting now that autumn is really settling in. As a recovering BBM addict, I can definitely say that doing this has definitely changed my perspective on the everyday things I take for granted.

So U of T, I propose a challenge for you all (including myself): Take a day (any day, really) to just leave your phone in your bag or pocket. Walk around and do the regular activities that you would do at school. You’ll definitely see a small change. You’ll be able to take in the fact that “Oh hey! The leaves are changing colour now!” You might even be able to catch your friend walking right by you, and who just so happens to be looking at their own phone texting.

You miss and take for granted a lot of things by just looking down. By putting that ridiculously addicting piece of technology down, you’ll see that actually looking at the REAL leaves changing colour is a whole different experience than just seeing a picture of it on your phone; trust me.

OH on Twitter: Welcome Back, Welcome Back, Welcome Back!

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Ohhhh can’t you just smell the freshness in the air? A brand new school year, a brand new start! Admit it. You’re kind of glad to be back…well, for now at least you are. No worries about readings and deadlines yet but just relishing in the moments you have of seeing your old friends again. Oh and who are you kidding…you’re kind of excited to be back in class again. Wondering if the courses you’re taking will be any good, if the profs will be fun and engaging, checking out the hot guys or gals in the class…it’s okay, no need to deny it!

Twitter’s been buzzing all week with thoughts on the new school year. Have a look at what some people have to say…

So for the good, the bad, and the ugly…here’s to another school year at U of T. Let’s make it the best it can be!

OH on Twitter: Course Selections

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Ahhhh, it’s that time of the year  that we love to hate and hate to love…the dreaded/beloved course selections. I don’t know about you but I’m on the love side. There’ s nothing like planning a fresh new academic year. It’s just so full of hope, optimism, and excitement…free of the crushing weight of readings, labs, exams, and tutorials. It’s the calm before the storm and yes, I love to savour every moment of it.

Unfortunately, ROSI wasn’t so kind to me this year. I’m in my final year of undergraduate studies and got the late 10 AM enrollment time…leaving me on waitlists for courses that I desperately want to take. But alas, that is the life of a U of T student.

Read what other students are tweeting about course enrollment…some were successful, others, well, not so much!

OH on Twitter: Protests, Police, and Passion

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

As expected, the G20 has taken over the Twittersphere the past week with users from all ages and walks of life, tweeting about the happenings downtown. Some (okay many) expressed their displeasure and outrage of what went down during the G20, provided live updates, and others even used Twitter to organize protests. So…where were you during the G20 weekend? Did you catch any of the protests? Were you a protester yourself? Let us know!

Twestival Toronto

Monday, March 22nd, 2010
tweet. meet. give.

tweet. meet. give.

It’s a Twesti-whaaaat? It’s a Twestival! …A global fundraising event that is bringing together the online Twitter community from hundreds of cities around the world to support  and celebrate a good cause. And yes, it’s coming to Toronto! This Thursday, March 25th at Tryst Nightclub, join hundreds of Torontonians as they rally behind Concern Worldwide, raising funds for an international humanitarian organization dedicated to reducing suffering and ending extreme poverty. Organized 100% by volunteers, the team behind Twestival Toronto ensures that 100% of all tickets and sponsorships go directly to Concern Worldwide.

Now I know the question that’s hanging on all of your minds… “I don’t have Twitter, can I still go?”. Of course you can! You don’t need to be on any social networking site to go out and support a cause that you believe in! So this Thursday, take a break from your studying blues (you know you want to!) to kick back and meet some cool new peeps all while supporting a more than worthy cause!

When: Thu, March 25, 2010 1:00 AM – 1:00 AM
